A downloadable game

Hi! Welcome to Solar Robot, a retro-style adventure/survival game I made for the olc::BeatTheBoredom game jam.

In this game, you play as a little robot with a solar panel on their head. Try to delve as far deep as you can through a randomly generated long-abandoned facility. Just don't run out of power! Moving consumes power, as do your active systems. Recharge power by standing in patches of sunlight, which you'll find around the facility. (See, it totally conforms to the theme because you have to go find the little bits of light from the outside.)

You have three systems: Camera, Stats, and Map. Running each of those systems takes power, so be sure to turn them off if you don't need them!

You might find some handy components scattered around the broken machinery:

  • Batteries increase your maximum power capacity.
  • Capacitors give you an extra life. If you would run out of power while holding a capacitor, instead the capacitor gets used up and restores half your max power.

There is controller support, but my controller is slightly broken so some things may go wrong.

Controls:

  • WASD / Left Stick: Move
  • J / A: Toggle camera
  • K / B: Toggle stats
  • L / X: Toggle map
  • Any key or button: "Start"

Current high scores:

  1. Me: 1800
  2. Simco: 1300
  3. Noyemi K: 500

Post your scores in the comments, and have fun playing!

This game was made with Monogame. All assets were made by me for this jam. For more information please see License.txt included with the download.

Want a cool Solar Robot desktop background like the one behind here? The game can be launched in the secret Picture Mode! Put a file called picture.txt in the same folder as Run Solar Robot on Windows. You can leave it blank, or put two numbers and the name of the file you want to generate, separated by spaces. (201 201 output, for example. The numbers must be odd). Then, run Run Solar Robot on Windows.bat, and wait a while (maybe go and get a coffee or something, it takes about 3 minutes on the default settings on my computer). It should spit out a nice .png file for you.

Windows only, unfortunately. (For being designed to be cross-platform Monogame has very few resources on how to cross-compile...)

Double click Run Solar Robot on Windows.bat.

1300. This game is so good, it's one that I could probably play for quite a while. The trade-offs make for some interesting decisions, go a bit further for the battery and if so, do I need to do it almost blind to get back?

And you included a background generator too. Just amazing!

500... man, this game is tough 😓

Very fun though, it's interesting finding strategies 👀
